Electric Blankets and Energy Conservation
Electric blankets provide a lot of comfort all winter long, but did you know you could use them to conserve energy too? Using electric blankets to keep energy costs low is easy.
Here’s how it works:
At night, when you’re asleep in bed, make sure the thermostat at home is turned to a lot lower setting than it typically would be. Use your electric blanket instead, but program the MiniTimer to shut off the electric blanket after a given amount of time so that you don’t get too hot and use extra energy all night long. The electric blanket will use less electricity than your thermostat because it’s a low-voltage appliance, and it’s closer to your body. And you won’t be paying to heat the whole house, just your bed.
Energy conservation ideas with the MiniTimer and electric blanket:
- Time the MiniTimer to warm up your bed an hour or so before you climb in.
- Set the MiniTimer to turn off your heating pad at night when leaving it on could be dangerous.
- Turn off oil-filled space heaters at night.
- Use the MiniTimer to remotely control the lights from your bed and shut them off at bedtime.
How does the MiniTimer do it?
The X10 MiniTimer turns any overhead light or appliance that runs on AC power into a part of its internal alarm clock. You get to decide how to use it, and why. Just plug the Lamp or Appliance Modules into the appliance you want to use it for, and set them to Timed Events with the MiniTimer.
You Should Know
Keep in mind that your X10 System will always turn lamps and appliances on or off the instant you press the buttons. That's obvious - but there can be some unexpected consequences.
For example, an empty coffee pot can be remotely turned on. If that should happen, your coffee pot may be damaged from overheating. If an electric heater is turned on by remote control while clothing just happens to be draped over it, a fire could result. Therefore, do not use with high power heating devices such as portable heaters.
Always be aware of what appliance you are turning on or off so that potentially dangerous situations will not occur. X10 is not liable for damage or injury caused by improper use of the product.
