“We were Tired of being greeted with a very cold reception, since the house was kept at 45 degrees when we were not there. When it was just my wife and I, it was fine and somewhat cozy in front of the fireplace. However, when we started having kids, the cold wasn't nearly as charming and eventually became a reason not to go to the vacation home when it was cold.
Rather than leaving the heat on when we were not there or buying some $400-$500 thermostat, we turned to X10 to solve the problem very inexpensively. The trick was to hook two thermostats to our furnace in parallel. The primary thermostat was wired into a Universal Module and always left at 72 degrees.
The universal module can be turned on/off manually or can be turned on/off via the MiniTimer. When the universal module is off, the furnace won't be activated by the primary thermostat. The backup thermostat (hidden from general view) was hooked directly to the furnace and set at 45 degrees to stop our pipes from freezing when the primary thermostat was turned off. This set-up gave us the comfort of knowing that our pipes wouldn't freeze, but gave us the convenience of dialing ahead and turning on the primary thermostat so it would be a nice and toasty 72 degrees when we arrived. It has come in pretty handy in the summer as well, since we don't have to arrive to an overbearingly hot house.”
